The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department (EODD) of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) recently discovered a U.S. 325-pound depth bomb under the sea near Seghe in the Western province.
Supervising Director EODD Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Ansa Puaraua said, the bomb was reported by the local divers to the RSIPF.
SSgt Puaraua said the U.S. bomb contains over 100 kilograms of explosives and is attached to a World War II plane under the sea.
Supervising Director Puaraua said to protect the wreckage and the environment, the bomb will be removed from the plane and disposed of on a later date.
Currently EODD are working on a plan to safely remove and dispose of the bomb.
SSgt Puaraua said, “Our EODD officers, after qualifying as divers, go down to Seghe and locate the bomb. The operation was conducted over four days.”
Mr. Puaraua said this operation displays the increased capability and professionalism of the EODD officers in dealing with bombs under sea or water.
