GROWING concerns over rising incidents of public disturbances in Gizo, Western Province have sparked fresh calls from residents and community leaders for stronger community policing.
The Gizo Police have also been urged to take proactive steps to prevent further escalation.
Over the past several weeks, locals have reported a surge in disorderly behavior, including late-night noise, street altercations, and general disrespect for public order.
If left unaddressed, these minor disturbances could lead to more serious criminal issues in the near future.
Community leaders are pleading for a more visible and responsive police presence, as well as improved collaboration between law enforcement and the community to maintain peace and public safety.
“There needs to be a stronger and more consistent presence of police officers in our neighborhoods,” a community elder from Gizo Collin Norid told Solomon Star in an interview.
“We are seeing more young people roaming the streets at night, some involved in disruptive behavior. If this continues, it could lead to bigger issues such as theft, violence, or even gang activity,’’ Mr. Norid said.
Norid emphasized the importance of community policing strategies that not only address crime but also build trust between residents and the police.
He noted that community outreach programs, patrols, and regular engagement with local leaders could go a long way in restoring public confidence and deterring crime.
Residents echo similar sentiments, expressing hope that authorities will act swiftly to restore order and protect the town’s peaceful reputation.
‘’This would also need extra support and help from churches in collaboration and more importantly parents and guardians as well to address this issue,” they said.
As of this report, the Gizo Police have not issued an official statement, but growing public pressure is expected to prompt a response.
Locals are calling for immediate dialogue and action before the situation worsens.
