The Canaan community in Northwest Choiseul has officially commissioned a new chapel, marking a significant spiritual milestone for its people.
The newly built chapel, named St Patrick Chapel, was commissioned this week in a well-attended ceremony that drew more than 800 people from the Pemba zone, including Barabarakakasa, Pachuava, Sirovanga, Vanimo and Tiqatare.
The commissioning service was led by Fr. Ben Vatuabatu, who encouraged the congregation to remain steadfast in faith.
The theme of the event “Humble and Trust in God,” echoed throughout the service, emphasizing unity, and trust on God amid ongoing challenges.
However, the absence of a common worship space was compounded by ongoing disputes among community members, mainly over land ownership and personal matters.
Community elder Mr Ephraim Maqatakesa took the initiative and construct a small chapel using only local bush materials to serve the Canaan community
The construction began on early January this year and was successfully completed last month.
Community leaders expressed hope that the establishment of St Patrick Chapel will help restore peace among the Canaan people, and provide a place for fellowship and the sharing of God’s word for generations to come.
