LOCAL communities in Heruiesi in South Malaita recently took part in a series of activities under the Community-Based Fisheries Management (CBFM) program.
This was aimed at strengthening sustainable use of marine resources in Malaita province.
The event included; reef monitoring training and a review of the community’s management plan.
Participants were first introduced to reef monitoring techniques through on-land practice sessions.
Malaita Provincial Fishery Officer Mathew Isihanua said, the exercises allowed community members to familiarize themselves with data collection methods and monitoring equipment before heading out to sea for actual reef assessments.
He said, the practical training at sea gave participants hands-on experience in recording key information about reef health, fish populations, and marine ecosystems.
Community leaders and trainers emphasized that these skills will help locals better understand the state of their marine environment and make informed decisions about conservation and resource use.
In addition to training, the review of the management plan provided an opportunity for the community to reflect on progress made under the CBFM program and to discuss adjustments needed to address current challenges.
Mr Isihanua said, this process ensures that management strategies remain relevant and effective in protecting local fisheries and supporting livelihoods.
Community members expressed appreciation for the program, noting that it empowers them to take ownership of their marine resources while safeguarding them for future generations.
The activities at Heruiesi highlight the growing importance of community-led efforts in marine conservation across Malaita Province.
