The Chinese Embassy on Thursday donated 40 sewing machines through the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs to support women’s empowerment and improve livelihoods in rural communities.
The handover ceremony, held at the Chinese Embassy headquarters in Honiara, coincided with the 2026 Honiara International Women’s Day celebrations.

“On behalf of the Chinese Embassy, I extend my sincere greetings to all women in the Solomon Islands. Across the globe, women are not just mothers, sisters, or daughters—they are pioneers, leaders, and change-makers.
“Their contributions have shaped history and continue to drive our societies forward. Our Honourable Minister present today is a fine example of this.”
He added, “To commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day, the Chinese Embassy is donating 40 sewing machines through the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs to help promote women’s causes and improve livelihoods in rural communities.”
Minister Choylin Yim Douglas expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for the generous donation.
“These gifts are incredibly precious to us. In our communities, many cannot afford such equipment, and this donation fills a vital need,” she said.
She added that the contribution goes beyond providing equipment; it empowers women to improve their families’ lives.
“By giving women, the tools to create and mend, you are enabling them to support their households and generate income. We thank the Chinese government for this support and will ensure that these gifts reach those who need them most, ensuring a lasting impact in the community.”
Meanwhile, Joan Tuhaika, General Secretary (GS) of the Solomon Islands National Council of Women (SINCW), noted that the Council was present to witness the handover.
She explained that the sewing machines would be distributed by the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs after discussions on the best allocation to communities in need.
