The Choiseul Provincial Government (CPG) has activated its emergency response committee as cyclone Maila continues to affect communities across the province.
The provincial premier Hon. Harrison Pitakaka confirmed that the province’s emergency operations center is now fully operational and actively receiving reports from affected areas.
“Our emergency operation center is currently active, receiving reports from our affected communities. The provincial response committee was also activated this morning [Monday],” he said.
He explained that while the situation remains critical, authorities are currently focused on gathering information and monitoring the extent of the damage caused by the ongoing bad weather.
“Currently, we can’t do much but receive reports and continue to monitor the extent of the current impacts,” the Premier stated.
He further assured that the government is working towards ensuring the safety of all residents.
“The government is working to ensure safety for all in due course. I keep my contact active with our emergency center at the moment to continue receiving information on risks, damages, and our community response management actions,” he added.
He expressed hope that clearer action plans and response measures will be outlined soon as more information becomes available from the ground.
“I hope likely tomorrow [Tuesday] we’ll hear from our people about our action plans and response measures,” he said.
Despite the limitations in immediate response, the provincial government has issued safety advice to communities, urging residents to take all necessary precautions as they deal with strong winds, heavy rain, and rough sea conditions.
“Remember to take extra precaution measures and ensure safety while we collectively mitigate this situation,” he said.
“Listen out to safety advice through our media and radios and continue to maintain important contact with authorities for reports and other emergency situations.”
Most villages across Choiseul Province have reportedly experienced significant impacts from the current weather conditions.
Residents are urged to follow official advisories as the provincial response committee continues its monitoring efforts.
