A primary school along the Taeloa river in West Fataleka, Malaita Province, was completely destroyed by fire last month, leaving students, teachers, and parents devastated.
The school, which catered for children from pre-school up to grade six, had been the main education provider for surrounding communities.
Its destruction has created a major setback for the students and teachers.
Reports said, the blaze sparked panic, with women and children fleeing into the nearby bush for safety.
Many villagers were left traumatized and uncertain about the future of their children’s education.
The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed.
However, an unverified report suggested the incident may have been linked to a conflict.
Malaita’s Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Superintendent Michael Ramosaea, confirmed that one suspect was arrested over the weekend in connection with the arson incident.
“The school at Taeloa was completely destroyed, leaving the community unsettled and fearful,” Superintendent Ramosaea said.
“While police continue investigations, the support of local communities is vital to restore law and order.”
He commended community leaders for their cooperation in assisting police.
He thanked the leaders for working closely with the police to address crime-related activities.
“I appeal to everyone to continue supporting police efforts to keep our villages peaceful and safe,” he added.
