Construction work on the Sikaiana Classroom Project in the Malaita Outer Islands Constituency has officially commenced, bringing renewed hope for improved learning facilities in the remote island community.
Groundwork and structural preparations are now underway, with community focusing on foundation works, site clearing and leveling.
Installation of essential infrastructure, including water storage facilities, is also progressing to ensure the new classroom is properly supported.
Malaita Outer Islands Constituency said the early phase of construction is crucial to the long-term success of the building.
“Although people may only see groundwork at this stage, this is the most important part of the project.
“A strong foundation will ensure the classroom is safe, durable and able to withstand harsh weather conditions,” the constituency said
He added that the project aims to provide students and teachers with a secure and conducive environment for teaching and learning.
“For our island communities, access to quality infrastructure is vital. This classroom will create a better space for our children to focus on their education and achieve their goals,” it stated
The project is funded by the Australian Government through the Australia Community Partnership Program, reflecting ongoing support for education development in rural and climate-vulnerable communities across Malaita Province.
Once completed, the new classroom facility is expected to significantly improve learning conditions for students in Sikaiana and strengthen education services within the constituency.
