THE Honiara City Council (HCC) has announced a mass eradication of dogs, targeting particularly stray and unlicensed dogs in the city.
The operation commenced as of February 1, Saturday.
In a statement issued last week, HCC emphasised that the operation will target stray dogs and those found without proper tags to indicate they are licensed.
To ensure the safety of pets and enhance public safety, HCC urged all dog owners to take immediate action by registering their pets.
The registration fee per dog is set at $50 and owners are reminded that compliance is essential to avoid any adverse consequences during the eradication operation.
In an effort to facilitate this process, HCC officers will conduct walk-in registration drives across various neighborhoods in Honiara.
During these inspections, residents will be offered the necessary forms to register their dogs, while unlicensed or stray animals will be identified and noted for removal in accordance with the Dog Ordinance enacted by HCC.
“The right to manage stray and unlicensed dogs is a crucial aspect of maintaining public health and safety in our city.
“We encourage all pet owners to proactively register their dogs and be part of a responsible pet ownership community. Together, we can ensure that Honiara remains a safe and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
“Residents are reminded that the city council has the authority, under the Dog Ordinance, to humanely put down any unlicensed or stray dogs found within its control beginning on the effective date of the operation.
“The council stresses the importance of responsible pet ownership and encourages the local community in Honiara to take part in ensuring that their dogs are properly registered and cared for,” HCC said in the statement.
