Corruption impacts negatively on our future, our children’s future, our resources, our democracy and the development of Solomon Islands, its people and natural resources and urges everyone to unite and to take a stand against it.
This is the message for the 2016 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD).
This year the theme for the International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) campaign is ‘Break the Corruption Chain’.
This theme encapsulate the greater call for action and responsibility from the government, private sector and civil society to play an active role in breaking the chain the binds corruption to flourish in government institutions, private sectors and in the society as a whole.
In statement on Tuesday the chairperson of the organising committee, Ruth Liloqula said that the program will commence at 8:00am on Friday morning beginning with the ‘Walk Against Corruption.’
This will start from the Honiara City Council, parking space to the National Art Gallery where the main event of the IACD will be held.
Ms Liloqula said “corruption harms everyone in society. It robs the community of important goods and services. It creates distrust and political instability. Corruption is an obstacle to a country reaching its potential and offering a better future to all. This country cannot afford to allow the level of corruption, the misuse and abuse of entrusted power for personal gain rise to a disastrous epidemic level that leads a society into chaos than a prosperous one for all.”
“Today it is a fact that many people in the country know that corruption is bad, many more people talk about corruption in their everyday conversation, preachers preach it to their congregation, people comment and write about it in the media as well as the social network but when it comes to action, this is always an issue that we need to break free from if we want to break the corruption chain”
“On that note ,we the 2016 IACD organizing committee are inviting the general public, Civil society organization, students, private businesses and faith base organization to be part of the walk against corruption come December 9th and lets solidified our stand against corruption and its disastrous effect that continue to ruin our nation Solomon Islands” Mrs. Liloqula stated.
The statement explained International Anti –Corruption Day is a day where people, institutions or organisations who share common views about corruption and have witnessed it or have become victims of its effects can come out together in numbers to rally support against corruption.
The membership of the organising committee for this year’s event includes representatives of the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Leadership Code Commission, Office of the Ombudsman, Office of the Auditor General, Public Solicitor’s Office, Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, Law Reform Commission , CBSI Financial Intelligence Unit and Transparency Solomon Islands.
