Dear Editor – I am writing to express my deep concern about the practice of dumping rubbish into the Lunga River in East Honiara.
This river was a place for fishing, washing, swimming and gathering, is now under serious threat due to careless and irresponsible waste disposal by some residents.
Plastics, food waste, and even hazardous materials are regularly seen floating downstream, risking the health and safety of residents who rely on this river for daily needs.
Not only does this harm our ecosystem, but it also destroys the beauty of our environment and poses serious long-term risks.
I urge the government, local authorities and community members to take swift action. We need stricter enforcement of waste management laws, awareness campaigns, and community clean-up initiatives to restore the river to its former glory.
Sincerely,
