People in the Shortland Islands are hoping plans for tourism development in the constituency will materialize soon.
This follows an announcement by the Member of Parliament (MP) and Minister for Home Affairs, Isikeli Junior Vave of his vision to develop the tourism sector in the constituency.
Vave had unveiled his plan during a Constituency Development Committee (CDC) tour in Western Province last November.
During the tour he highlighted Shortlands’ untapped potential to attract both domestic and international tourists.
He highlighted the pristine beaches, vibrant marine life, and historical significance of the islands as a World War II site as the foundation for a strong tourism sector that could generate income, create jobs, and boost community pride.
“This is not just about attracting visitors; it’s about empowering our communities to benefit economically and socially while maintaining our identity,” Vave said at the time.
The MP further revealed that landowners and chiefs had agreed to support proposed tourism activities, particularly plans centered on Faisi Island, located opposite the new Lofung Police Patrol Naval Base currently under construction.
The naval base itself is expected to generate more economic activities in the area and could complement tourism ventures in the years to come.
While consultations with landowners, chiefs, the Ministry of Tourism, and community representatives were planned to create a tourism roadmap, locals claimed they are still waiting to see tangible progress.
The tourism initiative was also aligned with the national government’s broader agenda to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on traditional industries.
Residents now hope that with major infrastructure such as the Lofung base underway, Vave’s vision for tourism will eventually take shape and bring long-term economic benefits not only to the Shortlands but also to Western Province as a whole.
“We are now looking forward and proud that our MP also priortize tourism development in our untapped natural resources, beautiful islands, pristine marine life and other potential sites that will tourist tourists and international visitors,” a Chief from Nuhu who declined to be named said.
For now, communities remain optimistic but cautious, awaiting concrete action to transform the MP’s vision into reality.
