Construction of the Rescue Fire Service Station at Honiara International Airport is making steady progress.
The Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) has confirmed.
The work is funded by the World Bank under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) and is being implemented by MCA.
China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) is carrying out the works, with the construction supervision services provided by Egis.
So far, 90 percent of the construction materials have been delivered to site, while physical completion stands at 53 percent.
A temporary delay was encountered last month due to non-compliance in concrete compressive strength during foundation works.
Following collaborative efforts between CRCEG, the Supervising Engineer, and the Project Support Team, rectification works are now underway.
On the compliant section of the foundation, the contractor has commenced under-slab blockwork and concrete pouring for columns. Backfilling works are ongoing, followed by slab reinforcement and formwork installation.
The superstructure phase is expected to begin later this month.
Permanent Secretary of MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, said: “This facility is vital for strengthening aviation safety and emergency response in Solomon Islands. We are pleased with the progress and remain committed to delivering a high-quality, resilient station for all air travelers.”
Beyond the Rescue Fire Service Station, SIRAP2 is delivering a range of infrastructure investments across the country.
These include the construction of Aviation Complex Building, significant improvements to Noro Roads, construction of four new bridges in Malaita, upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfields, installation of air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, maintenance of regional airports, rehabilitation of 21 kilometers of East Road between Baratolo and Atori, and sealing of 12 kilometers of North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.
These investments are designed to enhance connectivity, promoting safe travel and supporting inclusive economic growth across Solomon Islands.
