HONIARA: – The Telecommunications Commission of Solomon Islands (TCSI) has clarified its position on recent public concerns over mobile data pricing, following meetings with Our Telekom, Bemobile, and other stakeholders.
In a statement, TCSI said it acknowledged concerns raised by the Leader of Opposition, Hon. Matthew Wale, and members of the public, stressing that these issues are important and being addressed in line with its mandate under the Telecommunications Act 2009.
The Commission explained that Sections 69 and 70 of the Act guide its oversight of pricing. Section 69 requires providers to clearly notify and describe prices, while Section 70 outlines a process for evidence-based regulation, factoring in social, economic, and geographic benchmarks.
“For clarity, data plans are seasonal products that providers package and promote based on their business models, costs, and market factors,” TCSI said.
“While many consumers feel the recent changes by Our Telekom are expensive, the actual unit price of data remains broadly in line with Bemobile and other service providers.”
However, TCSI confirmed it has directed Our Telekom to:
- Fully comply with Section 69 by providing clearer and more timely notice to customers on any changes to its data plans; and
- Review the structure of its data plan packages, considering the negative impact reported by consumers.
Reaffirming its role as a fair and impartial regulator, TCSI said its focus is on protecting consumers, ensuring price transparency, and promoting competition.
“Our priority is to ensure that Solomon Islanders enjoy affordable, transparent, and quality telecommunications services,” the Commission said.
