The future of football in the region hinges on the development of young players.
That’s according to Western Football Association (WFA) President John Smith Pitabelama.
Speaking with Star Sports recently, Pitabelama emphasized the crucial role of nurturing young girls and boys in football, underscoring that these players are the future assets for the sport.
Pitabelama highlighted that investing in the growth of young female players and boys is essential for building a strong foundation for future teams.
“By 2030 in our vision, these young players will become our senior and national team representatives,” he said.
He stressed the importance of focusing on both Under-20 and senior national teams for both girls and boys.
“At this stage of development, we need to concentrate on producing skillful and resourceful players. Many of these players are students, so it’s important that we provide them with proper care and attention.”
To achieve this, Pitabelama appeals for increased support and resources across football communities, centers, and zones.
He emphasized the need for qualified coaches and referees to ensure professional football development from grassroots to elite levels.
“We require more trained coaches and referees.
“One or two qualified individuals per center are not sufficient. We need a larger number of skilled professionals trained by the Solomon Islands Football Association (WFA).”
Pitabelama also addressed recent issues related to player eligibility, citing the recent Women’s Festival League and the selection process for Western Tomoko’s U14 boys team.
He warned against the use of false certificates, stressing that only genuine birth certificates will be accepted.
“Players must present accurate birth certificates to qualify for competitions.
“Because any small lies or mistakes could lead to disqualification.” He said, they’re committed to ensuring that only authentic documents are used to select the final squad for the Western Tomoko teams.
Pitabelama’s comments reflect a broader commitment to enhancing football development and maintaining integrity in player selection.
“The focus on youth development is expected to bolster the future success of football in the western province,” he further added.
