WITH the national general elections only months away, there have already been reports of fierce door to door campaigning done by intending candidates in communities within the national capital.
Reports reaching this paper claimed that a good number of intending candidates have already started holding community meetings and also visited homes in attempts to win support, leading up to the national general elections.
Several high profile and former Member of Parliament’s have also been claimed to have been heavily involved in such strategic campaign approaches.
Reports have it that most of these candidates visit families, promising and even offering huge sums of money and benefits in exchange for their support and also for their voters ID cards.
Some have also been claimed to be running around with forms and lists for voters to fill up and be registered as their voter prior to the elections.
“Some of these candidates are well established figures not only in the political arena but also in society.
“I think it is a good start for some of them that they are coming to voters personally, seeking out our concerns and what we want from our leaders, however this does not guarantee that they will do the same once they have the power as MP’s,” were the general remarks of some of the residents of Vura in East Honiara.
Similar sentiments were uttered by others from the other two constituencies in Honiara.
“We have also had various meetings being conducted one after another at some of the intending candidates’ houses.
“Some have even gone to the extent of affiliating their campaigning with community and even church groups,” Smith and a group of residents from White River said.
Meanwhile this paper understands that such practices are normal as intense campaigning have already began however yet to be made public.
