Solomon Islands’ top female assistant referee, Natalia Lumukana, has made her FIFA World Cup debut, officiating in the Group C match between Norway and Ecuador and Sunday’s Group D match between Samoa and Nigeria at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2025.
Lumukana made history as only the second match official from the Solomon Islands to officiate on the global stage, following in the footsteps of Jovita Qilamsala, who paved the way in 2008.
Speaking to Star Sports, Lumukana said it was a dream come true to officiate at a FIFA World Cup event.
“I was excited and a bit nervous, with mixed feelings as I stepped onto the pitch for my first appearance at a FIFA World Cup tournament. I felt humbled to walk out with my OFC colleagues on my first World Cup. It was a dream come true for me personally,” she recalled.
Reflecting on the experience, Lumukana highlighted the high level of preparation required for the global stage.
“The S-League back home has helped build my confidence over the years and given me valuable match experience. In OFC, the level of competition varies depending on the championships,” she explained.
“However, at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the level of preparation is very high. It requires more concentration, focus, and dedication. We have to perform at our best when given appointments.”
Following in the footsteps of Jovita Qilamsala, the first female match official from the Solomon Islands to officiate in a FIFA-sanctioned tournament, Lumukana said Qilamsala was her inspiration.
“Hearing Jovita Qilamsala and others share their experiences truly inspired me to pursue football refereeing. You need passion, interest, and a clear aim to achieve what you want in life. For me, refereeing has given me confidence to thrive in a space that is often male-dominated,” she said.
Lumukana also took the opportunity to express her gratitude to those who supported her journey.
“I want to acknowledge the Solomon Islands Referee Department, SIFF, OFC Referee Department, my family, and my refereeing colleagues who have trained and encouraged each other to reach our goals. And foremost, I thank our Heavenly Father for His strength, wisdom, and protection,” she said.
Lumukana is part of an all-female officiating team led by Fijian referee Torika Delai, with Allys Clipsham of New Zealand as the other assistant referee during the two matches.
