A public bus driver and his conductor were arrested for operating a short-route service in Honiara.
The Honiara City Council (HCC), through its Law Enforcement Division carried out the arrest.
Operating short-bus route is a violation of the Honiara City Council Public Transport Ordinance.
The arrest was made following routine checks conducted within the city to ensure compliance with designated bus routes.
The bus involved was immediately detained by HCC authorities as part of the enforcement procedure.
The bus conductor was fined $2,500 for his involvement in the offence and has since settled the penalty.
Meanwhile, the driver and the registered owner of the vehicle are set to appear before the Honiara Magistrate’s Court at a later date to face formal charges.
Short-route operations—where public buses avoid completing their full licensed route in favour of quick returns—are prohibited under HCC regulations.
These practices not only disrupt public transport services but also exploit commuters who rely on consistent and reliable travel across the city.
The Council views such breaches seriously and will continue to intensify enforcement operations across all routes.
HCC has reminded all public transport operators that failure to comply with route permits and operational standards will result in legal action, fines, and possible suspension or revocation of operating licenses.
Honiara City Council remains committed to ensuring fair, safe, and efficient transport services for all residents.
