A lower-grade version of methamphetamine is believed to be circulating within the communities, with users now able to purchase it for as little as $100.
A confidential source with in-depth knowledge of the local drug trade has warned that authorities must urgently take action, as the drug situation is becoming increasingly unmanageable.
“In the past, one gram of methamphetamine was sold for around $3,000 to discourage low-income users from accessing it,” the source said.
“Now, you can get a scoop for just $100.”
The source alleged that police have failed to take appropriate action against drug traffickers due to connections between certain officers and those involved in the illegal trade.
“Reports have been filed with the police, but no action has been taken because some senior officers are believed to be siding with drug traffickers,” the source claimed.
Further allegations suggest that some individuals are collaborating with suspended police officers to raid Chinese-owned businesses in Honiara suspected of selling the drug.
“They threaten Chinese businesspeople and demand money. When these businesses report the matter to police, no action is taken,” the source claimed.
The source also alleged that some families and individuals are bribing police officers to protect their children and personal interests.
The source has called on the responsible authorities to enforce stricter measures to prevent drug importation, stating that methamphetamine is now widespread across society.
“Drugs are entering the country through planes and ships without being intercepted.
“Authorities must strengthen border controls, or the situation will deteriorate further, similar to what has been experienced in Fiji,” the source warned.
In response to the reports and claims, Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) said, it is currently following up on those allegations and needs more information from the public.
“Anyone with relevant details is encouraged to reach out to the police. Your assistance could be crucial in helping to ensure our communities are safe.
“RSIPF appreciates any tips or leads that can be provided, as even small pieces of information can make a significant difference. Together, we can work towards a safer environment for our communities.
“By working together with your police (RSIPF) and sharing insights, we could create a more informed and vigilant society.
“It is important that we all take an active role in reporting suspicious activities and supporting one another in maintaining peace and security in our communities,” the statement said.
The statement added, Police also welcome the allegation of any police officer involved in any drug dealing to report it to the Professional Standard Internal Investigation (PSII) Department to deal with any officer allegedly implicated in such activities.
Its understood most people smoke, inject or swallow a pill.
Sometimes people dissolve it into alcohol or water and drink it.
If one smoke it, it has an immediate high, just in a couple of minutes you’ll get quite a big hit.
Whereas if you ingest it through your stomach it’s about 20 minutes before you start to feel the effects.
The immediate effects from ice are intense pleasure and clarity. Users say they have lots of energy and can think clearly, feel like they can make good decisions, and plan effectively.
This is because methamphetamine dramatically increases the levels of the hormone dopamine – by up to 1,000 times the normal level – much more than any other pleasure seeking activity or drug.
Physical effects can include dilated pupils, an increased heart and breathing rate, a reduced appetite and an increased sex drive.
