The Development Services Exchange (DSE), as an umbrella body for NGOs, stands in solidarity with the Solomon Islands National Council of Women (SINCW) and the Honiara Council of Women in condemning the recent cases of attacks and attempted abductions targeting teenagers, young women and school children.
These actions are criminal under the laws of the Solomon Islands, and we call upon the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) to prioritize thorough investigations into these alarming incidents.
“We are deeply concerned about reports circulating on social media that detail how young girls are being followed, harassed, and in some cases, attacked by unknown individuals.
“This situation has created widespread fear and anxiety among parents, guardians, teachers, families, and the broader community.
“We share in the outrage of SINCW that these acts reflect a disturbing disregard for the safety and value of women and girls in our society.”
In response, DSE urges the RSIPF to conduct heightened visibility patrols in school zones, communities, and other identified hotspots around town to ensure that these threats are swiftly addressed.
It is essential to restore a sense of security to our neighbourhoods and protect our children, who are the future of our nation.
At the same time, we emphasize the importance of unity and collaboration in safeguarding our communities.
The protection of women, girls, men, and boys is a shared responsibility, and we must all act with vigilance and care. We urge everyone to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or dial 999/28999/21194/39608/22336 without delay.
However, as law-abiding citizens, its also important to approach these situations with caution and responsibility.
“While it is natural to be concerned, we encourage the public not to fuel unnecessary panic or spread unverified information.
“It is crucial that we trust in the legal process and work closely with the authorities to address these incidents, ensuring that our responses promote peace and stability.
“The safety and well-being of all citizens, regardless of gender, must be a priority for us all. Let us stand together in upholding the rule of law and protecting the dignity of every individual in the Solomon Islands,” the statement said.
