Defending Solrais Women’s Premier League (SWPL) champions Henderson Eels Women’s Football Club (FC) are back in action in their title defence after a 1-1 draw with current leaders Naha FC, marking the start of the league’s second-round.
Eels remain unbeaten with five wins and one draw from their six matches but however still have four round one catch-up matches to play, along with their scheduled round two fixtures with head coach Godfrey Manehioha well aware of the challenging schedule ahead.
Speaking to Star Sports, Coach Manehioha emphasized the importance of staying focused.
“Since we know we’ll be facing a very tight schedule in this final round, I have told the girls to work together, stay focused, and remember our goal for the end of the league. I hope they understand that and see it as motivation,” he said.
A great number of Eels players were part of the national women’s team that made history last month by winning the country’s first-ever OFC Women’s Nations Cup title. Manehioha admitted this impacted their recent preparations.
“Most of my players were with the national team and needed rest afterwards, which affected our training turnout. But we’re happy to start our campaign with a draw,” he added.
The coach reiterated that the ultimate goal is to retain their SWPL crown, while acknowledging strong competition.
“That’s our ultimate aim, to defend the title. But we know teams like Naha and Frigates are strong contenders this season,” he stated.
Eels also suffered a major setback ahead of the second round, with their captain and star player, Ileen Pegi, moving abroad to join Fijian club Labasa FA.
“With Ileen, we respected her decision. She’s a great ambassador for women’s football in the country and an inspiration to many of the girls on our team,” said Manehioha.
Despite the challenges, Henderson Eels remain unbeaten and currently sit on 16 points from six matches.
