A Farmers volleyball competition for ladies is being organised in the highlands of Ward 29, Central Kwara’ae, Malaita province.
The competition officially commenced on Wednesday at Aitolo village.
This event aims to promote the participation of rural women and girls in sports especially volleyball apart from their usual busy schedules at home and gardens.
The theme for the competition is; “Volley for Unity,” which aims to foster togetherness amongst women in the Busurata catchment area.
A total of eight teams have registered to compete in the tournament.
According to the organizing committee, the competition faced delays.
The initially plan was to coincide with a soccer competition in June.
However, due to a lack of cash prizes, the competition was delayed.
But after securing prize money, the competition is able to get underway.
Wilfred Abi, chairperson of the organizing committee, expressed his enthusiasm in sports event.
He noted that this tournament marks a new chapter for the communities, being the first time, they have organized such a colourful and exciting volleyball competition for women.
“As chairperson, I am thrilled with this event, which is meant for the women,” Abi said.
He extended his gratitude to the sponsors for their generous support, Our Telekom and Lesley Sanga.
Our Telekom sponsored the trophies, medals, and individual prizes.
Lesley Sanga and his family, generously provided the cash prizes for the competition.
Its not the first time for Sanga to support such sports event.
“I truly appreciate his commitment to such initiatives,” Abi said.
