Two fishermen from Keara Village, Rannonga Island, Western Province, have survived after drifting at sea for three days when their outboard motor (OBM) broke down last week.
Relatives told the Solomon Star the pair had travelled from Rannonga to Gizo on Wednesday. The following morning, they went fishing near a rafter off Gizo Island when their 15-horsepower engine suddenly developed mechanical problem in open seas.
“As a result, they drifted helplessly, and the wind carried them northwest towards Marovo and New Georgia waters,” a family member said.
With only a small supply of food and water, the two men quickly ran out of provisions. Relatives said the pair became weak as the days passed but remained strong and hopeful of rescue.
On Saturday, a passing boat travelling near North New Georgia and Marovo spotted the fishermen after they cleverly used a mirror to reflect sunlight and signal for help.
The rescuers transported them safely to Noro, from where they later returned to their home village in Rannonga.
The incident once again highlights the risks faced by rural fishermen and the importance of carrying safety equipment, spare parts, and sufficient food and water when travelling at sea.
