A former police officer facing traffic offences has been given a lesser fine when he was re-sentenced in the Honiara Magistrates Court recently.
Ubaldo Tiva paid a total fine of $700 in default of four weeks for the charges of reckless and dangerous driving and careless driving.
He was fined a total of $1,500 after pleading guilty to the offences in 2010 but then appealed the sentence.
His argument was based on the fact that when he committed the offence the Amendment (Traffic) Act was not yet in force.
He argued that he should be sentenced under the old Traffic Act.
Tiva committed the offence between July 7, 2008 and July 8, 2008 when he was driving a government vehicle dropping off off-duty police officers.
