A former Premier of Western Province has renewed calls for Noro in the Western Province to be elevated to a city status.
George Solingi Lilo said, this strategic move will unlock the full economic potential of the province and strengthen Solomon Islands’ position as a regional trade and industrial hub.
Speaking to Solomon Star, Mr. Lilo said, Noro’s ideal location and role as the gateway port for international tuna exports along with key maritime routes given infrastructure, geographic advantage, and investment interest needed to support urban-scale development.
“Elevating Noro to city status would not only attract increased public and private investment but also enable the expansion of services, governance structures, and urban planning essential for sustaining large-scale industrial and commercial growth,” Mr. Lilo said.
He added, that formalizing Noro’s role as a national economic engine would also relieve pressure on Honiara and decentralize development across the country.
“City status would give Noro the legal and institutional framework to support inclusive development—from fisheries and logistics jobs to improved housing, roads, healthcare, and education for surrounding communities,” he stated.

Mr. Lilo further emphasized that city status would empower local government to better manage urban expansion, promote environmental sustainability, and enhance service delivery through a dedicated city charter.
“In short, transforming Noro into a city is not just a symbolic upgrade. It’s a strategic decision that can redefine the Western Province’s role in national development, promote balanced regional growth, and prepare our economy for a more resilient and diversified future,” he said.
He also challenged the current leadership of the province to act with urgency, given that the Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) Billy Veo representing Noro Ward now serves as the Premier.
“Now that the MPA for Noro is the Premier, how does he sees Noro—from the eye of a tiger, or are we going to continue sleeping until the end?” Mr. Lilo questioned.
Noro currently has access to the second international port and second international airport at Munda.
The tourism is also growing within that region offering more potential for the centre.
