A sports tournament is currently underway at Polo village in Varisika Ward 11 in North Choiseul this week.
The ‘George Vakana Cup’ tournament features 11-a-side football for men and netball for ladies.
The competition commenced on Tuesday and is scheduled to conclude end of this week depending on how fast the matches are being played.
Teams from three villages – Polo, Pangobiru and Ogoh within the ward are participating. Each village have two football teams and two netball teams.
This means a total of six teams are participating in soccer and six teams for netball.
The competition is being organised for the first time by the Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) for the ward Hon. George Vakana which also earns the name for the competition as ‘George Vakana Cup.’
According to the President of Ward 11 responsible for organising the competition Brian Matarikisi, the aim of the social event is to bring all the youths and communities together so that they are busy and refrain from engaging in anti-social behavour in the communities.
Matarikisi said, since the start of the competition, most of the youths have been busy and looking forward for the competition.
Matarikisi said, the host community of Polo is packed as villagers from nearby communities come together to witness some exciting sports actions this week.
Cornelius Alolobatu Team Manager for Sabo United said, the crime-free event has brought everyone together.
He also acknowledged the sports competition because it would help to develop the skills of the rural players especially in football.
The competition is played in two separate pools for both soccer and netball.
Team with the highest point wins the competition for both netball and football.
Matarikisi has thanked MPA Vakana for facilitating the tournament for the benefit of the youths in the communities.
Registration fee for both soccer and netball is $100 per team.
The winning prize for soccer and netball are;
1st Trophy + $1000 cash
2nd – $1000 cash
3rd – $800 cash
4th – $600 cash
