The Governor General, His Excellency, Sir Reverend David Tiva Kapu (GCMG), has commended ongoing progress in strengthening the country’s national security measures.
Delivering his Speech from the Throne at the opening of the third sitting of the 12th Parliament on Thursday – 24 April, Sir David commended the Ministry of Police, National Security, and Correctional Services, together with partner Ministries and Agencies, for proactively leading several vital legislative and regulatory reviews to strengthen the country’s national security preparedness and protection.
Sir David referred to the recently launched National Security Strategy 2025 framework aimed at addressing evolving threats, including climate-related risks, transnational crime, and regional geopolitical shifts, as part of ongoing efforts to secure the country from these threats.
Currently, an implementation plan is being developed, and work is underway on a national security legislation to give full legal effect to the strategy.
The Ministry, together with partners, is also progressing a review of the National Border Strategy and the development of a Maritime Security Strategy.
“These initiatives are vital to strengthening our sovereignty, border protection, and national preparedness,” Sir David said.
Ongoing reviews of the Police Act and Correctional Services Act are also moving forward, with stakeholder consultations scheduled in the coming months.
Additionally, the Ministry has initiated reviews of the Dangerous Drugs Act and the Road and Transport Act.
Though these legislations fall under other ministries, they are being examined from a national security perspective to address key operational gaps.
