A high school female student is currently in police custody after she was suspected of giving birth to a child and later dumped the body into sea in Marovo, Western Province.
The alleged incident occurred on the 3rd of January 2026.
The infant was discovered after a man went diving along the coast near the village. Its not clear whether its a boy or girl.
He then alerted family members who went and collected the corpse.
Seghe Police was informed and the young girl was apprehended.
Reports said, the young girl denied being pregnant after being questioned by her mother and family members after returning from the boarding school she attended.
It was after the discovery of the dead infant that family members suspected of her being pregnant.
The father because unhappy reported the matter to Seghe police where she was subsequently apprehended for questioning.
The following week, she was shifted to Gizo where charges are believed to be laid and is now in custody.
A community leader in Marovo said, the incident highlighted the need for young girls to be honest with themselves.
“If you are pregnant seek advice and do not attempt to hide it from your family.
“If the baby is alive and you decided to take off his/her life, its murder and you will be charged for it,” the leader said.
Attempts to get comments from Seghe and Gizo Police were unsuccessful.
