Tensions flared in Gizo last week as several betelnut vendors stormed the Office of the Gizo Town Clerk and the Western Provincial Government (WPG) Headquarters.
This was in response to the crackdown by authorities to remove unlicensed betelnut vendors in a move to maintain order and cleanliness in Gizo town.
Reports claimed the vendors shouted at the authorities with harsh languages.
However, Gizo Police Officers quickly intervened and resolved the matter at the Gizo Police Barracks.
Speaking to Solomon Star in an interview, Gizo Town Council Clerk, Charles Kelly, explained that the vendors were merely following orders from the Office of the Premier.
He emphasized that there are designated areas for selling such products, and vendors should adhere to these regulations.
“There is a proper venue for them to sell their products,” Kelly said, urging vendors to comply with the rules.
Authorities continue to encourage vendors to follow legal guidelines to maintain order and ensure the safety and cleanliness of Gizo town.
