Three-days Independence Under-20 Peace netball tournament for young girls held in Gizo, Western Province ended on a very high note.
It was organized by the Western Peace & Reconciliation in Partnership with Gizo netball association which showcased young rising stars. Not only that but it cemented the relationships between these very young female athletics.
Speaking at the prize-giving and closing ceremony, Deputy Director for Western Peace & Reconciliation Office, Wilson Liligeto stated that, “netball is truly a disciplinary sport which paves in the way for unity within the community and long-lasting peace.”
Master of ceremony (MC) Rendy Solomon, a Western netball veteran also highlighted and reminded all the players of all 26 teams, their fans and supporters and attending Gizo community members, that, netball is all about respect, discipline and obedience.
“This tournament is not only about skills empowerment but more so about disciple, obedience and respect for others around you. In this way we will ensure peaceful and harmonious living together.”
Team managers, coaches and more so the parents were very shocked but also proud to see how fast these little girls excelled from the past two years, since the commencement of this under-20 peace netball tournament and therefore praised and thanked the Western Peace and Reconciliation Office to support such sports development program.
They whole heartedly requested that this program continue.
While all 26 teams went home happy with their consolation prizes and individual players for their outstanding performances, four teams went home with greater smiles on the faces, pats on their backs and congratulatory messages for receiving trophies, medals and cash prizes for coming first in the four categories.
First prize winners for all four categories are as follows: GNA “A” for Category 1(Under-8), Gizo Helicon for Category 2 (Under-11), Saeraghi for Category 3(Under-15) and Grassroots for Category 4 (Under-20).
Only one team (WMA) went home with an extra recognition from the Western Peace & Reconciliation Office for rendering a composed peace song prior to the tournament, which will become the official peace song for Western Peace and Reconciliation Office and its program in the Western Province.
As a closing remark Mr Liligeto cannot hold back his feelings for such triumphant outcome of this tournament and therefore greatly thanked the organizing committee for a job well done and the fans for a peaceful support and boldly declared.
“Our office will definitely continue to support this program.”
This declaration thereafter created the most vibrant uproar of cheers from the players and all their fans and family members, ending the 3-day fun-filled, action-packed and peace-sustained sporting program in Gizo.
