The Western Provincial capital of Gizo experienced a calm and joyful Easter weekend, with communities across the township celebrating the holiday in peace and harmony.
Unlike previous years where minor disturbances were reported, this year’s Easter weekend stood out for its peaceful atmosphere, with police confirming no major incidents across the township and surrounding villages.
Churches were filled as residents attended Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday services. Local denominations, including the Anglican Church of Melanesia, Catholic Church, the United Church, and the South Seas Evangelical Church, held vibrant worship programs that drew large congregations.
The Gizo Market has been closed since Good Friday and is set to reopen on Monday.
Over the Easter weekend, several market vendors who remained in town continued to sell their produce outside the main market building, setting up along the cemented area within the market premises.
Whilst fresh fish continued to be sold at the fish market area outside, along the footpath.
Community leaders and residents alike praised the cooperative spirit shown throughout the weekend.
“It’s really encouraging to see everyone celebrating respectfully and peacefully,” Gizo Town Council Clerk, John Charles Kelly told Solomon Star
“This shows maturity and unity among our people,” Charles Kelly said.
Local police also credited the peaceful atmosphere to the strong collaboration between law enforcement, church groups, youth leaders, and community elders.
Regular patrols were maintained throughout the holiday, but officers reported no significant breaches of peace.
In the villages of Saeraghi, Titiana, and around Gizo township, families gathered to share traditional meals, partake in Easter games, and enjoy the long weekend by the beach.
Our Telekom Gizo also hosted a friendly dart competition with the Noro Telekom Team at the Gizo Telekom compound
“Easter reminds us of love, sacrifice, and togetherness,” Juiceman known as Jamaica Tanito said.
“It was heartwarming to see our people reflect these values in how they celebrated,’’ he added.
As the holiday wrapped up, many residents expressed hope that the spirit of unity and peace would continue beyond the Easter season.
Gizo now looks ahead to the coming weeks with a renewed sense of community, driven by the success of a quiet and meaningful Easter.
