It was a proud and memorable moment for Makira Ulawa goalkeeper David Hori as he stepped up to collect the Golden Glove award on Friday at the National Stadium in Honiara.
The 32-year-old had an outstanding tournament, making several crucial saves that helped guide his side to their historic first-ever Solomon Cup title.
Speaking to Star Sports after the final, Hori expressed his joy and pride in receiving the honour.
“I feel so happy to be winning this Golden Glove award in the Solomon Cup, which is one of the highest tournaments in our country,” he said.
Hori acknowledged that although the team had limited time to prepare, his personal dedication and hard work was paidoff both in lifting the trophy and claiming the individual accolade.
“We didn’t have what I would call great preparation leading up to this tournament. We only had a few weeks, but I also did my own individual training. Thank you to everyone who supported us in this journey,” he added.
The shot-stopper also emphasized the rising goalkeeping talent in his province and pledged to contribute his knowledge to develop future players.
“There are a lot of talented goalkeepers back home, and when I return, I’ll do my best to help train the younger lads and share what I’ve learned,” he said.
Hori wasn’t the only Makira Ulawa player scooping that individual awards, National defender and guest player Gordon Iro claimed the Outstanding Young Player award, while captain Jeffrey Bule was named Player of the Tournament.
Meanwhile, Guadalcanal Hornets striker Terrison Weni took home the Golden Boot after netting nine goals throughout the competition.
