Farmers in East Kwaio, Malaita Province have recently benefited from a climate resilient farming training organized by the Gwaunafiu Organic Farmers School in Central Kwara’ae.
The training, held at Diamassus in East Kwaio, is part of the school’s ongoing outreach program aimed at strengthening farmers’ knowledge and skills across Malaita Province.
Through these trainings, the school continues to support rural farmers by providing practical knowledge on sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices.
During the training, farmers were introduced to important concepts about climate change and how it is affecting agriculture in rural communities.
Participants learned practical methods to protect their soil, improve farm productivity, and maintain crop production despite changing weather patterns.
The training focused on simple and effective farming techniques such as soil conservation, organic farming practices, and ways to adapt farming activities to unpredictable climate conditions.
According to a report from Gwaunafiu Organic Farmers School, farmers also shared their own experiences and challenges, allowing for discussions on how communities can better prepare for climate-related impacts on food production.
It stated that the initiative is supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and implemented by the Kastom Gaden Association [KGA] under the Climate Resilient Farming Project.
Prior to the East Kwaio training, the same program was successfully conducted at Rabuta in East Kwara’ae, where farmers gathered to receive similar training and share traditional farming knowledge with modern climate adaptation practices.
Gwaunafiu Organic Farmers School continues to play an important role in supporting local farmers across Malaita Province.
Through its continuous training programs, the school is helping communities strengthen their resilience to climate change while improving food security and sustainable livelihoods.
The school remains committed to working closely with rural farmers, ensuring they have the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to adapt their farming systems and sustain their communities for future generations.
