Hakama Farm in Central Islands Province (CIP) is being revived after years of inactivity, as the provincial government seeks to prioritise agriculture and boost local revenue.
Speaking at the Piggery and Poultry Projects handover ceremony on Savo, Thursday – 21st August 2025, Deputy Premier Percival Vaga’a said, CIP received a herd of six cattle in July and another herd last week to support the revival.
“CIP’s new executive government policy focuses on productive sectors that will benefit our people in terms of revenue.
“Therefore, Hakama Farm has been revived, and cows will be raised here to kick start a local breeding program,” Vaga’a said.
Hakama, located in Ngella, is part of the province’s cattle farming initiative and aims to support livestock production as well as other agricultural activities, including coconut and cocoa cultivation.
A feasibility study for the farm’s development was conducted in 2022 with input from various stakeholders in Tulagi.
Vaga’a emphasised the importance of involving young people in agriculture. “We see agriculture as a main activity to generate income. Many of our young people are idle, consuming alcohol and engaging in activities that bring trouble.
“We need to engage them in productive work in our communities so they can learn to generate income, not just in offices but locally as well,” he said.
He also acknowledged Ngella MP Choylin Yim Douglas for collaborating with the CIP Provincial Executive Government to bring the farm back to life.
With Hakama Farm’s revival, CIP hopes to strengthen its agricultural sector, promote local employment, and provide sustainable income for communities in the province.
