HATANGA Hardwood Ltd recently farewelled Australian Business Volunteer (ABV) Anthony Green after completing his two-month contract with the local firm.
Mr Green was recruited under the Australian Business Volunteers program as Furniture Production Adviser.
A statement from Pasifiki Company Service Limited said during his time with Hatanga, Mr Green was responsible for examining the materials, methods and facility, in which local artisans were constructing furniture for the local market.
It said following some re-tooling, new designs and contemporary construction techniques;Hatanga Hardwoods is ready to develop a new range of timber furniture across a wide price range.
“Anthony has developed substantial respect for the furniture crew, who worked under less than ideal circumstances, and for Hatanga, who are committed to the workers and the local economy,” the statement said.
“His experience is a great degree of hospitality and inclusion, with the host organisation considering many aspects of his stay in Honiara.
“He also gained insight into local materials and island-style approach to getting the job done.”
The statement said the Australian Business Volunteer Program (ABVP) is an Australian Government funded programme, which aims to strengthen the mutual understanding between Australia and developing countries and make a positive contribution to development.
“ABV Program places skilled Australians on short-term (1 – 3 months) assignments in partner countries throughout Asia and the Pacific.
“ABV exchange skills and knowledge with local counterparts to strengthen the host organisation capacity.
“ABV Program is an international volunteers program for medium and retired skilled Australian citizens.
“The focus is skills transfer, capacity building, sustainable development, institutional strengthening and cultural understanding,” the statement said.
Since the program commenced in 2001, it has placed more than 20 volunteers with government departments, NGO’s and international organisations in Solomon Islands.
ABV program in Solomon Islands is managed by Pasifiki Services Limited along with Australian volunteers international (AVI).
