THE Honiara City Council (HCC) Law Enforcement Division has taken strong action against a bus operating illegally in the city.
A bus with dark-tinted windows that was caught working within the city boundary has been detained and fined $2,000 for violating HCC’s public transport rules.
This was not the first time for the same driver, and conductor be arrested and fined.
The conductor was fined $2,500 for running a short-route service, and the driver was fined $2,800 for not displaying the destination board in front of the vehicle screen. The owner of the bus has been summoned, and his case is now awaiting a decision from the Honiara Magistrate Court.
Altogether, HCC and the Honiara Magistrate Court have collected a total of $16,700 in fines as of 31 July 2025 from this and other similar cases involving illegal bus operations.
The buses are still detained at HCC until the owners make a provision or agreement that regulates the driver and the conductor to comply with HCC Ordinances and failure to comply will result in certain consequences.
Meanwhile, HCC has reminded all public transport operators to follow the law.
“All vehicles must meet safety, route, and appearance standards under HCC’s transport rules. Those who break the law will face penalties or be subject to court action.”
It also thanked the public for their ongoing support in reporting illegal transport services and encouraged all to continue working together to keep Honiara roads safe and orderly.
