A prominent Chinese businessman Zhong Ming Ma has offered a parcel of his registered land located at White River in West Honiara to the Honiara City Council (HCC) to be used as a market space.
A partnership agreement to seal the deal was signed on Friday, 27th June between Mr Ma and Honiara City Council (HCC) Administration.
The agreement marked a major step in improving market accessibility and infrastructure for residents of West Honiara, HCC said in a statement.
“Through this generous arrangement, Mr Ma has offered a parcel of his privately owned land located at White River to the Honiara City Council to establish and operate a public market,” said the statement.
This strategic location will serve the growing population in the western end of the city and help reduce congestion at the Central Market.
Present at the signing ceremony was Councillor George Kiriau, representative for Vavaya Ward, as well as the Chairman for Trade and Commerce, who expressed sincere appreciation for Ma’s support.
“On behalf of the Honiara City Council and the people of Honiara, I would like to thank Mr. Zhong Ming Ma for this generous offer.
“This reflects strong community partnership and the spirit of cooperation between local authorities and the private sector,” said Councillor Kiriau.
The new market will not only provide a dedicated space for local vendors but also contribute to economic growth and job creation in the area.
HCC remains committed to strengthening public-private partnerships as a means to improve city services and infrastructure.
