The Honiara City Council (HCC) Health Division has engaged ten Public Health students from Solomon Islands National University (SINU) for a one-month attachment commencing late September 2025.
This is part of practical training program in partnership with the Solomon Islands National University (SINU).
The program provides students with hands-on experience in key areas of public health, including environmental health, food safety, sanitation, and disease prevention.
It aims to help students apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom to real-life situations within the Honiara community.
Honiara City Health Director for HCC, Dr. Lawrence Diau, said the program is part of a long-standing collaboration between the HCC Health Division and the Solomon Islands College of Higher Education (SICHE).
“This is an ongoing intensive program that we used to have with SICHE, which is now SINU,” Dr. Diau said.
“For some years, we did not run it, but now we are reviving it because it is very important for our students to practically feel and experience what they learn.”
Dr. Diau emphasized that the partnership not only benefits the students but also strengthens the overall relationship between the Council and SINU in building the capacity of future health professionals.
Two of the participating students, Miss Nasan Alanaó and Miss Sarina Kuma, expressed their gratitude to both HCC and SINU for the opportunity.
They said the practical training has helped them gain valuable experience and confidence, which will enhance their abilities in their future careers.
The Honiara City Council reaffirmed its commitment to continue supporting education and professional development opportunities that contribute to improving public health services in the city.
