Helena Goldie Hospital in Munda, Western Province has received 100 birthing kits donated by the Bairnsdale and Johnsonville Uniting Churches in Victoria, Australia.
The recent donation also featured a handmade reproductive apron to teach about childbirth.
Wendy Flahive who is similar with the donation told the Solomon Star, these are free lifesaving gifts that can be given to all pregnant women and girls by changing a dirty birthing place into a clean one.
“Mother’s babies and midwives lives can be saved by the prevention of cross infection in even the remotest of places throughout the Solomon Islands with access to a kit.
“All women and girls are encouraged to attend a hospital or health clinic to deliver her baby but if she cannot make it due to distance or premature labour she simply gives the kit to whoever can help,” Ms Flahive said.
she explained, the kits help under resourced hospital midwifery units when they run out of equipment, vital free equipment saving lives.
Any NGO can also apply for a grant if they have the capacity to offer kits to pregnant women in remote communities and if successful become a partner organisation www.bkfa.org.au
