Dragon fruits have emerged as one of the most expensive fruits in the Honiara Central Market, with prices ranging from $30 to $80 per fruit.
Customers are spending $30 to $80 to pay one dragon fruit at the Honiara Central Market.
A long time vendor, Ben Pige, pictured below, told the Solomon Star the high costs of the dragon fruits are due to limited supply.
Despite the high price, Pige said the demand for the dragon fruits is very high.
He said customers responded well to purchase all his products every day because they have a lot of vitamins in them.
Currently, a farmer from Asia, who owns a big farm in East Guadalcanal, is supplying the products to vendors in town.
Pige encouraged other local farmers to go into planting the dragon fruits because of their high demand in town.
Dragon fruit, also known as ‘pitaya,’ is a tropical fruit with vibrant pink or yellow skin and white or pink flesh speckled with tiny black seeds, native to Central and South America, and now grown worldwide.
