Hundreds of faithful gathered at Holy Cross Cathedral in Honiara on Good Friday, 3rd April 2026, to solemnly commemorate the Passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ, entering deeply into one of the most sacred days of the Church’s liturgical calendar.
The observance began at 8:00 AM with a moving Passion Drama presented by the Cathedral youth.
The re-enactment opened with a prayer led by Christopher Cardone OP, who invoked God’s presence upon the gathering and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the youth for their dedication, sacrifice, and commitment in bringing the Passion of Christ to life.
The drama commenced at the Holy Cross Court, portraying the sacred events leading to Christ’s suffering, beginning with the Last Supper and continuing through the Agony in the Garden, the betrayal by Judas, the arrest and abandonment of Jesus, the trials before the religious authorities, Peter’s denial, His appearance before the Roman authorities, His being sent to Herod and returned, the scourging, mockery, and final condemnation.
The faithful then walked prayerfully through the Stations of the Cross, meditating on each step of Christ’s journey.
Along the car park and up the hillside, participants reflected as Jesus was condemned to death, took up His Cross, fell three times, met His Blessed Mother, was helped by Simon of Cyrene, had His face wiped by Veronica, met the women of Jerusalem, was stripped of His garments, nailed to the Cross, and died upon it.
The procession concluded inside the Cathedral with the Fourteenth Station, where Jesus was laid in the tomb, inviting all present into silent prayer, contemplation, and union with His sacrifice.
Despite heavy rainfall shortly after the drama began, a large number of faithful remained present throughout the reenactment.
Based on the Gospel of John, the drama moved hearts and minds to a deeper understanding of the suffering and redemptive love of Christ.
The observance attracted not only Catholics but also Christians from other denominations and members of the wider community, reflecting a spirit of unity, shared faith, and reverence for the mystery of Christ’s Passion.
Later in the afternoon, at 3:00 PM, the faithful gathered once again for the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion.
The solemn liturgy included the proclamation of the Word of God, the Veneration of the Holy Cross, and the distribution of Holy Communion, marking the hour traditionally associated with the death of Christ.
Throughout the day, the Cathedral became a place of deep prayer and reflection, as the faithful meditated on the life, suffering, and sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.
The Good Friday observance at Holy Cross Cathedral once again stood as a powerful witness of faith, devotion, and communal unity, leaving a lasting spiritual impact on all who participated and witnessed the drama.
