Construction of the new Rescue Fire Service Station at Honiara International Airport continues to advance steadily, with works now approximately 90 percent complete.
This important initiative was carried out under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), financed by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA). Construction is being carried out by China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) and supervised by Egis.
Recent progress includes the installation of external aluminium composite wall panels, interior wall plastering, windows, and staircase handrails.
Remaining works such as interior tiling, ceiling installation, painting and putty application, and door frame fitting are expected to be completed in the coming month.
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing works are also advancing with electrical wiring, lighting, floodlights, water supply piping, sanitary piping systems, and air-conditioning ducting well underway.
Telecommunication cabling and conduit installation have progressed, and both water tanks now fully installed.

Civil works activities continue, including roofing of the storage room, construction of the sump pit, fuel tank, absorption trench, perimeter drainage, and edge beam, all supported by detailed site preparation and excavation.
Permanent Secretary of MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, welcomed the progress, noting:
“We are pleased with the steady progress being achieved on the Rescue Fire Service Station under SIRAP2.
“As finishing works near completion, this facility will significantly enhance emergency response readiness and support safe and efficient aviation operations.
“This reflects our continued partnership with the World Bank in delivering resilient and essential infrastructure.”
The new facility is scheduled for completion in March 2026, marking a major milestone in strengthening aviation safety and emergency response capacity in Solomon Islands.
In addition to the Rescue Fire Service Station, SIRAP2 continues to deliver critical transport infrastructure nationwide.
This includes the construction of Noro Roads and new bridges in Malaita; upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfield; investments in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces; regional airport maintenance; rehabilitation of 21 kilometres of the East Road between Baratolo and Atori; and sealing of 12 kilometres of the North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.
