The second edition of the Honiara Masters Football League (HMFL) is set to kick off, with 12 teams confirmed for this year’s competition.
Formed just last year, the HMFL is a social football league aimed at providing senior citizens in Honiara the opportunity to participate in an organised football competition.
The league promotes a healthy lifestyle, encourages regular exercise, and fosters social connections among its participants.
The 12 teams are divided into two pools, with matches set to begin on Wednesday, August 5, at the Burns Creek SDA School Field.
In an interview with Star Sports, newly appointed HMFL Chairman Gabriel Riotarau said, this year’s edition would be better organised, building on lessons learned from last year’s debut season.
“This year, the HMFL 2025 season is more organised. We’re looking forward to another successful season, learning from last year’s competition. Also, with team representatives now part of the organising committee, things are more structured,” he said.
While the league includes a tough competition, its main goal is to keep senior citizens active and socially engaged.
Riotarau confirmed that the age limit and other regulations are being finalised.
“The competition focuses more on keeping people active and social than being overly competitive. The age limit starts from 35 and above, but the full regulations are in the final draft and will be shared with teams this week,” he added.
The league was initially scheduled to start on August 3 but was delayed due to several teams not submitting their team lists on time.
Riotarau also noted that the competition relies heavily on registration fees but welcomed support from businesses and organisations.
“The competition depends a lot on team registration fees. However, we’re open to any companies willing to support and working with older citizens,” he said.
Last year’s inaugural season featured 10 teams, with SIFF Legends crowned as the first HMFL champions after defeating S. Titans in a penalty shootout.
