Over the past weeks people ofDai island in Malaita province have learnt how to grow their vegetables and root crops using the organic farming method promoted by Kastom Gaden Association (KGA).
The visit by the KGA team was aimed at exposing organic farming to the people.
More than 30 participants attended the workshop.
The training focused mainly on planting food crops without burning rubbish and the use of chemical fertilizer to the plants.
Besides that they also promoted module gardening, soil management, crop rotation diversity, food security basket gardening based on ideology of utilizing small areas by growing food crops at places where there is limited space for gardening.
The visit was the first ever for KGA to the island. Dai was also affected by climate change impact.
KGA centre supervisor Severino Lausao said, they discouraged farmers to use ‘slash and burn’ method.
“Many people came to learn new things on how to grow their crops locally.”
KGA believes that the information and training given to farmers will help them changed their way of farming.
He acknowledged all participant and the community members for their positive response to the training.
