A couple from South Korea has expressed interest in exporting pineapples from Bina in West Kwaio, Malaita province to international markets.
Hynm Lee and his wife visited pineapple farmers in Bina last month as part of a scoping mission aimed at understanding the challenges farmers face in pineapple production.
Accompanied by agricultural officers from Auki, the couple visited several farms to observe firsthand the conditions under which farmers operate.
They also discussed the process of exporting pineapple samples to Korea, potentially opening new markets for local produce.
For many years, farmers in West Kwaio have struggled with pineapple farming, often without significant government support.
However, a media report states that the National Government is advancing plans for the Bonale Pineapple Processing Plant in West Kwaio, Malaita Province.
Discussions are ongoing regarding the establishment of a Cooperative Society Partnership model for stakeholders involved in the project.
Additionally, a government statement highlighted that key partners working on the development of the Bonale Pineapple Factory are making steady progress despite the negative financial impacts of COVID-19 on the Government’s budget.
The visit by the Korean investors has been welcomed as a promising opportunity for growth and development in the region.
Artnasio Ata, speaking on behalf of the farmers, expressed optimism about the visit.
“We are very happy about the opportunity the couple has brought to our doorstep.
“We look forward to this great opportunity because it will boost our efforts to maintain our existing farms and establish new ones, helping us overcome the struggles we face,” Ata said.
The farmers are hopeful that if the pineapple samples meet export standards, they will receive further updates regarding the potential export process.
This visit marks the beginning of what could be a fruitful partnership for the pineapple industry in Malaita, providing local farmers with much-needed support and a pathway to international markets.
