A local businessman, Jacob Kwan, owner of Toor Construction and Aveala Resort in Gizo, Western Province has donated musical instruments to the United Church congregation at Supato Village in South Vella, Western Province.
The handing over ceremony, held Tuesday last week, marked a historic moment for the Supato church and its surrounding community. The new instruments, including guitars, a keyboard, mics, speakers, cables, power amp and a drum set and others equipment yet to be handed , are expected to significantly enhance the church’s worship services and other community activities.
Speaking during the ceremony, Mr. Kwan highlighted the importance of supporting local communities and preserving cultural heritage through music.
“Music has always been a vital part of worship and community gatherings in our country,” he said.
“I believe these instruments will help uplift the spiritual lives of the congregation and also encourage the youth to be more involved in church activities.”
‘’As we all know, a common issue that arises in our surrounding communities is the concern over youths engaging in negative and anti-social behaviors.
‘’However this set of musical instruments could prevent them from getting involved in troubles and problems,’’ Kwan added.
Church leaders at Supato expressed their deep gratitude to Mr. Kwan for his generosity.
United Church Supato’s Pastor Vangani Dido, who leads the congregation, said the donation will have a profound impact on the church’s worship experience.
“We are truly blessed by this kind gesture. The instruments will help us create more vibrant and engaging worship services, and we believe they will also inspire our young people to use their talents in positive ways.”
‘’For after 40 years, we just received this musical instrument and I would like to say it is a blessing indeed and a historic moment for us,’’ Pastor Dido said.
Mr. Kwan, who hails from South Vella himself, said he is committed to continuing his support for community initiatives.
“This is just the beginning,” he said. “I am proud of my roots and will always look for ways to give back to my people,’’ he added.
He encouraged other local business individuals and people that at least giving back to the community like the church where you were brought up is one of the obligations that everyone must follow and it’s up to your own choice and will.
This donation is seen as a significant boost to the Supato United Church, reinforcing the idea that music can be a powerful tool for unity, spiritual growth, and cultural celebration in Solomon Islands communities.
The total cost of the musical instrumental set including those still to arrive, worth around $92,000.
