The Western Provincial Government (WPG) has begun reviewing its business licensing ordinance, with a particular focus on tourism operators, in an effort to streamline fees and make it easier for businesses to operate within the province.
Western Province Deputy Premier Brian Lotikena, revealed this development during the official opening of Fatboys Resort’s new Dive Shop on Saturday.
He said, more than a week ago, a team from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) visited Gizo to review the Western Province Business Licenses Ordinance, specifically targeting tourism business license fees.
According to Mr Lotikena, the review aims to create a fairer, more efficient licensing system by standardising fees for tourism operators across the province.
“At present, some operators are required to pay multiple fees for different tourism activities they offer under the same business,” he said.
He added, the provincial government is now looking at streamlining the process so that operators only pay one standard fee rather than several.
He described the initiative as a positive step toward promoting and encouraging tourism investment in Western Province.
“This move will help create a more business-friendly environment, reduce unnecessary costs, and attract more investors into the tourism sector,” the Deputy Premier added.
The IFC’s involvement is part of its continued partnership with the Solomon Islands Government and provincial authorities to improve business regulations, strengthen the private sector, and boost economic growth through sustainable tourism development.
Western Province remains one of the country’s top tourism destinations, boasting world-class dive sites, pristine islands, and a growing number of resorts.
Officials said the review of tourism business licenses is timely as the province works to rebuild its tourism industry following years of economic challenges.
