Dear Editor – As a concerned citizen of the Solomon Islands, I am concerned about the expanding litter problem in Honiara.
Our metropolis, rich in history and culture, is being inundate by careless garbage disposal. Waste fills the streets, marketplaces, and beaches, posturing health risks and destroying the ecosystems.
Littering is more than simply an eyesore; trash pollutes our waters, endangers marine life, and causes flooding by logging drainage systems.
Improper trash disposal spreads diseases, putting our communities at risk. If we do not act, the situation will deteriorate, endangering our people’s well- being and the reputation of our cherished city.
I urge all Solomon Islanders, particularly Honiara residents, to take responsibility. We must properly dispose of waste, promote recycling, and raise awareness about the consequences of littering.
However individual action is insufficient. Furthermore, the government has to enforce stringent regulations, make investments in environmentally friendly trash disposal, and established a second approved disposal location in addition to Ranadi, which is located distant from the centre of town.
The Honiara City Council is responsible for providing enough trash cans across the city and ensuring appropriate Waste disposal places. Additionally, Companies and NGOs need to back awareness campaigns and clean-up efforts.
We must protect Honiara because it is our home. Thus, through promotions and raising awareness with collective actions and strong leadership, we can restore its’ beauty and ensure a cleaner, healthier future for generations to come. Now is the time to take action.
Sincerely,
DEBBIE HOITA KUVE
