The Women’s Rights Action Movement (WRAM) has congratulated the only Parliamentarian Freda Tuki Soria Comua who won the seat for Vatud Constituency, in Temotu Province last week.
Mrs Comua is the only female to have won a seat in the tenth Parliament among 49 males.
The organisation in a statement yesterday said Mrs Comua’s win is an achievement for women who have contributed to the development of the country and have vied, although unsuccessfully for leadership positions in the country’s ultimate decision making body.
“WRAM would like to urge Mrs Comua to understand the development needs of her constituency and the country and help to push for better strategies of development.
“The organization would also like to encourage Mrs Comua to lead with integrity putting aside agendas that are detrimental to the development of our country including corruption.
“This new female MP should be the women’s voice in advancing gender equality and human rights through better health services, better education, better access to justice, better infrastructure and the improvement of other basic services.”
WRAM is a new NGO aimed at influencing Government Policies and Legislations that affects women and working together with other NGOs and stakeholders to improve the situation of women in the country.
Its focus areas are promoting women in decision-making and leadership, eliminating violence against women and women’s economic empowerment.
