Local carvers are proudly showcasing their traditional woodwork at Lambete Station in Munda, Western Province as Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders arrive today for their retreat in Noro.
Among them is 62-year-old Mex Elijah of Rendova, who is displaying and selling his finely crafted carvings.
He joins a number of other local artists who have set up stalls to present their work to visitors and delegates passing through the township.
“This is our chance to show case our talents and crafts at the same time get smaller income from this selling.
“Apart from this selling a little knowledge I know about this visit of the leaders to meet with other Pacific Leaders to share and discuss issues that affects the Pacific community as a whole,” the father four children added.
The display provides a platform for local talent to be seen by regional leaders while also giving communities a chance to benefit from the short but significant stopover.
The PIF retreat is expected to bring heightened attention to Munda and Noro, with local residents preparing to showcase their pride and culture during the leaders’ visit.
